Job Applications from China

After months of surges in email applications from India to work in my lab, today I had an inquiry from China.

It does make me wonder how they find me or even think I have a physical “lab”. let alone the fact I am on a different continent, would have to deal with visa and other issues etc. I admire the idea, just not so sure an email will rise above the noise. As usual I am happy to forward their CV if anyone actually has a position, capabilities or even a more relevant project for them as I do not work on cancer research.

Dear Dr. Ekins,

I am writing to inquire about the availability of obtaining a postdoctoral position in your institution. As the enclosed resume shows, I receive my Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Huaqiao University, 2010. After graduation, I worked in Xiamen Peking University Bioway Co., Ltd. to be engaged in separation and purification of nerve growth factor (NGF). A year later, I was given the opportunity to conduct doctoral research at the State Key Laboratory of Cellular Stress Biology, Xiamen University. I will graduate from Xiamen University in July with a degree of Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I am currently completing studies on the inhibitory mechanism of Crocodile Choline on Human non-small-cell lung carcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo.

My research interests focus on cancer research and carcinogenesis, such as cell signaling and the regulation of cell fate; the regulation of tumor suppressor/inhibitor: stability, activity and localization; the features of cancer cell lines correlate with their response to anti-cancer drugs. During my pre-doctoral work, I obtained a lot of research experience and experimental skills. As a result, I served as primary author and co-author on a number of publications. In order to further enhance my research experience repertoire, I hope to obtain a postdoctoral fellow position in your group. I believe my interest, my passion, coupled with my skills and previous experience qualify me as a candidate for one of your research positions.

Thank you for your time. Attached my updated CV for your furthermore consideration. Please do not hesitate to contact me if further information is needed. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

    Dear Professor Sean Ekins,

I am writing to apply for a postdoctoral position in your group. I am currently a doctoral student in Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and I will obtain my Ph.D. degree in June 2014.

My Ph.D. researches focus on the development of mass spectrometry-based methods for the study on the following fields: the metabolomics study on anti-drug cancer cells, the activity amino acid level in anti-drug cancer cell and sensitive cancer cell, the bio-character of a new pH-sensitive and tumor targeted doxorubicin prodrug, and a new mercury ions detection method by DNA aptamer used LC-MS/MS, my study was also involved in the small molecular label-free nucleic acid probe which was published in 2009. Some interesting results have been published in organic letters, and submitted to Journal of pharmaceutical science, Analytica Chimica Acta.

I am also skilled in biochemistry and molecular biology technologies. During my master degree, my study was focus on constructing the engineering vaccine. I am good at genetic recombination, gene expression, protein purification, and protein identification.

I can perform experiments independently on lab’s mass spectrometers including the UPLC-ion trap MS (Thermo LTQ XL), the UPLC-Q-TOF MS and ion mobility MS (Waters Synapt G2), the UPLC-triple quadrupole MS (Waters Xevo TQ), the FT-ICR MS (IonSpec. 7.0 T), the MALDI-TOF MS (AB SCIEX Voyager DE STR) and the direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART MS) And as well as the UV-Vis spectrometer and the Fluorescence spectrometer. Our group’s research directions mainly focus on metabolomics, proteomics, non-covalent interactions between biomacromolecule and small molecules, herbal medicine and pesticide residue analysis. I have gained solid knowledge on the working principles of the instruments and the daily maintenance of MS and LC-MS.

I am confident that my academic background is suitable for your project and I will be a successful research assistant. Your research is so outstanding that I really believe the postdoctoral research in your group will be a matter of extreme importance to my future academic career.

Attached please find my CV. For recommendation letters, please directly contact X, Y and Z. If you need additional materials or information, I am happy to supply it. Thank you very much for your time.
